Elizabeth Andrews (1776-1817)

Elizabeth was born around the year 1776, possibly in Haw River, North Carolina. Haw River was an early settlement on the banks of the Haw River and was very near the site of an earlier Sissipahaw Indian village, within Orange County (prior to 1849). Her parents William & Mary Lloyd Andrews were one of the earliest families to settle in Orange County, NC, where they raised a large family of at least 12 children. Elizabeth’s father owned land near the upper reaches of the town of Hillsborough, extending south of the “Great Road” (the old Raleigh-Greensboro Stage Coach route) to the upper limits of Morgan Creek near the present-day town of Orange Grove.

Elizabeth was around 16 years old when she married David Edwards, Jr. North Carolina Marriage Records record the marriage bond date of August 28, 1792. The couple soon relocated to Ashe County, where David purchased land in 1799 & 1800 immediately after the North Carolina General Assembly authorized the creation of the county. The county was named for Colonel Samuel Ashe, an American Revolutionary War veteran, a judge, and governor of North Carolina. In fact, her husband David was elected to the state legislature in 1812.

Elizabeth and David raised 11 children on the frontier of North Carolina, in the same place Daniel Boone once called home. Elizabeth was around 40 years old when she died on January 10, 1817. She is buried in the Elizabeth Edwards Cemetery in Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina.

Elizabeth’s brother Starling‘s daughter, Jane Anders married her grandson David Edwards 18 years after her passing.
